About Koh Lipe

Everything you need to know about Thailand's hidden diving paradise in the Andaman Sea

Welcome to Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe is a small island in the Andaman Sea in the south of Thailand near the Thai-Malay border. Part of the Tarutao National Marine Park — Thailand's largest marine park — the island measures approximately 3.5km by 2.5km with only a couple thousand rooms total.

Characterized as small, remote, and surrounded by uninhabited islands with breathtaking beauty, Koh Lipe is 60km from the nearest Thai port (Pak Bara) and 40km from Langkawi. Often referred to as the "Maldives of Thailand," it boasts powdery white sand beaches, vibrant coral reefs just metres from shore, and a laid-back island atmosphere.

The island has three main beaches: Pattaya Beach (south), Sunrise Beach (east), and Sunset Beach (west). Walking Street connects Pattaya to Sunrise Beach and is the main hub for restaurants, shops, and nightlife.

Koh Lipe Fact Sheet

National Park Fee

Koh Lipe is part of Tarutao National Marine Park. Entry fee: 200 THB for adults, 100 THB for children (cash only). Paid upon arrival at the pier. Keep your ticket — it's valid for 5-7 days and covers all park islands. Rangers may check during snorkeling or diving trips.

Money

There are 6 ATMs on Walking Street (Krungsri bank) with a 200 baht fee per withdrawal. ATMs may run out of cash during busy periods, so bring backup cash. About 40% of shops accept credit cards with a 3-4% fee. No banks on the island.

Communications

Three mobile networks operate: DTAC, AIS, and TrueMove. DTAC is often the most reliable. Buy a SIM card at 7-Eleven on Walking Street or at the airport before arrival. WiFi is available but speeds are limited — the island relies on microwave transmission from the mainland.

Getting Around

Koh Lipe is very small — even the furthest destination is only a 30-minute walk away. Most areas are accessible by walking along the beach. There are no cars on the island. Local taxi boats charge 50 baht per person for island-wide transport.

Medical

Several clinics with English-speaking staff: TakeCare Clinic, Andaman International Clinic (24/7), and Siam International Clinic. Lab tests, x-rays, and pharmacy available. Serious cases are transferred to Bangkok Hospital Hat Yai on the mainland.

Island Character

Koh Lipe has one 7-Eleven but no Starbucks, McDonalds, or other chain stores. The island retains its laid-back, authentic character — no cars, no high-rises, just beaches and relaxed island vibes.
